Project Description

The complex at Pozzo d’Adda, located in an industrial context on the 525 provincial highway from Milan to the Vaprio bridge and wholly lacking in quality, was made up of three connected and staggered buildings following the slope of the road, albeit in a context of buildings aligned instead with provincial highway 180. Requirements of production and expansion of the activities carried out inside it as well as reorganization of the company’s premises made it advisable to take advantage of the building land made available by the Territorial Management Plan of Inzago just over the boundary of the area.

The enlargement of the built-up area thus offered an opportunity to rethink the complex as a whole, not least in relation to the possible restructuring of highway 525 with the opening of a new front and access. The project envisaged two different systems: a construction to the south capable of housing the production and processing units of a company manufacturing installations for trade fairs and exhibitions, and enlargement of the system of offices on the west side towards the road. The new volume is enveloped in a single uninterrupted skin capable to lending homogeneity to the whole, both the existing part and the new, and of using the space between the new building and the old to conceal facilities such as the space for waste disposal.

This skin thus thickens the outer shell to the point of endowing it with volumetric substance and giving the complex a new image. The existing part and the new are connected by a new staircase unit that handles the flow between the expanded spaces and provides the new point of access.
Structured as a tool capable of managing construction on an area straddling the territory of two different municipalities, namely Inzago and Pozzo d’Adda, the project developed a particular pathway with a view to direct implementation and obtaining rapid agreement among different bodies called upon for a contribution towards the enlargement and restructuring of an existing parking lot in the industrial area in return for the indirect public benefit of the operation. The architectural project thus once again broadens its horizons and presents itself as a tool for the implementation of provisions regarding no only construction but also urban planning.
